What
is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture
is a medical treatment that can relieve symptoms of some
physical and psychological conditions and promote a patient's
body to heal and repair itself. Recent research shows that
acupuncture can benefit most of the body's systems - the
nervous system, muscle tone, hormone outputs, circulation,
antibody production and allergic responses, as well as the
respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.
How
does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture
is the gentle insertion of hair-fine needles into specific
points (pressure points) on the body to stimulate the flow
of one's Qi (pronounced chee) or natural healing energy.
Additional techniques can also be used further stimulate
the natural healing powers of your body. One technique involves
the application of heat to the "pressure points"
(Moxibustion). Another involves stimulation with very low
voltage electricity (Electro-Stimulation). Please consult
your acupuncturist for more details.
Is
Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture
and herbal treatments are free from side effects or dependencies.
However, you should always inform any health practitioner
about all pre-existing conditions, the names of all medications
you are taking, whether you are, or could be pregnant, and
if you have a cardiac pacemaker or cosmetic implants. Your
acupuncturist will be able to evaluate your specific situation
with this information to insure the best results.
Does
Acupuncture hurt?
Many people are surprised to learn that acupuncture needles
are very thin. This means that you will feel no real pain.
Acupuncturists can attain a high level of skill in gently
placing these tiny needles into the skin with a minimum
of pain and discomfort.
How
can Acupuncture help me?
Acupuncture
can be used to treat a variety of conditions.
As a general rule, if you are suffering from pain, acupuncture
may help to relieve your pain. Results can never be guaranteed.
Some people react very well to acupuncture while other people
notice little change. In addition, acupuncture often improves
sleep, promotes relaxation, and results in a feeling of
improved well-being.

How
many treatment sessions will I need?
Usually
one or two treatment sessions per week, but the number of
treatments depend on your condition. Many conditions can
be alleviated quickly with acupuncture and herbs. Chronic
illnesses may require treatment for several weeks or longer.
Acute problems generally respond much faster. As in any
form of medical care, the patient's attitude, diet, determination
and lifestyle will affect the outcome and course of treatment.
