CIGARETTE SMOKING

A fact many people already know, is that cigarette smoking increases the overall risk of death as much as 70% compared to non-smokers. Smokers die five to eight years earlier than non-smokers. The chance of getting cancer for the smokers is ten times higher than the non-smokers. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of heart attack as much as twice compared to non-smokers. It is estimated that each cigarette smoke life can be cut short by 7 minutes. Smoking is the single most important environmental factor contributing to premature death in the United States.
The smoke resulted from burned cigarette contains more than 4,000 chemicals and 200 of them are toxic. Non-smokers can breath in this secondhand smoke and the same unhealthy effects that happen to a smoker, such as cancer, heart disease and stroke, can happen to the non-smoker.
If a pregnant woman smoke her baby could be prematurely born, with low weight and non-full term. Nicotine from cigarette can cause the mother's blood vessels to constrict, delivering less oxygen and nourish to the unborn baby. If the pregnant woman is around cigarette smoke, she and her baby are both breathing in the secondhand smoke containing poisonous substance; prematurity of the baby could be a problem.
Children who live with smokers are sick more often than children who do not. They have more colds, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, and ear infection. Children who live with smokers are twice as likely to become smokers themselves than children growing up with parents who do not smoke.
